Head of Public Law / Experienced Solicitor


Location: Cardiff / South Wales (hybrid & flexible working available)
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience


A well-established law firm with a strong South Wales presence is seeking an experienced Public / Administrative Law Solicitor to lead its Public Law team.


This is a senior role suited to a solicitor who wants to work on high-quality public law matters without stepping away from the region, combining technical excellence with leadership responsibility.


The Role

The Public Law team undertakes a wide range of public and administrative law work across Wales and England, acting for both individuals and organisations. Matters include:

  • Education
  • Social care
  • Public service change and closure
  • Inquests and public inquiries
  • Judicial review proceedings, including matters before the High Court
  • You’ll have genuine input into the strategic direction of the department, while remaining closely involved in complex casework.


Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a specialist Public Law team based in South Wales
  • Manage complex public law and judicial review matters
  • Ensure compliance with Legal Aid Agency and Lexcel requirements
  • Support business development, profile-raising, and sustainable growth
  • Maintain consistently high standards of client care


About You
  • Extensive experience in public law, including judicial review
  • Strong working knowledge of legal aid funding
  • Leadership or supervisory experience, or clear readiness to step into a senior role
  • Excellent communication skills and sound professional judgement
  • An interest in building a long-term role within a regional practice
