Job Description

At Thames Water, we make a daily difference to the lives of 16 million customers by supplying 2.6 billion litres of water through 32,000km of pipes - keeping taps flowing and toilets flushing. We deliver life’s essential service so our customers, communities and the environment can thrive.

We are looking for an Associate Management Accountant to support our Capital Delivery Finance team. This is an excellent opportunity for a part-qualified accountant to build on their experience and develop within a complex, regulated environment.

What you’ll be doing as a Management Accountant
In this role, you will support the delivery of accurate financial reporting, analysis and controls across capital programmes. You will work closely with Finance Managers, FP&A and Business Partnering teams, gaining exposure to management accounting, capital accounting and regulatory reporting, while developing your technical and commercial skills.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Supporting month-end close activities, including preparing journals, balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules
  • Producing variance analysis and financial insights to support FP&A and Business Partner teams in understanding key cost drivers
  • Assisting in the preparation and maintenance of CapEx reporting, including spend tracking and project performance analysis
  • Supporting CapEx vs OpEx assessments, documenting rationale and escalating for review where required
  • Contributing to the preparation of accounting papers and internal control documentation with guidance from the Finance Manager
  • Supporting the production of regulatory reporting returns and cost allocations
  • Ensuring compliance with accounting standards and internal control frameworks
  • Identifying and improving processes to drive efficiency, consistency and stronger financial governance
  • Responding to ad hoc requests for financial analysis, supporting cost visibility and business case development
  • Building effective relationships with stakeholders across finance and the wider business
Base location: Hybrid - Clearwater Court, Reading, with occasional travel to other sites as required.
Working pattern: 36 Hours, Monday to Friday

What you should bring to the role
Essential:
  • Part qualified accountant (ACCA, ACA, CIMA)
  • Previous experience in a finance or accounting role
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and standards
  • Good analytical skills with the ability to interpret and present financial data
  • Confidence using Excel and working with large datasets
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information to non-finance stakeholders
  • Ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Desirable:
  • Experience with SAP and/or HFM
  • Exposure to capital accounting, project accounting or infrastructure environments
  • Experience in utilities or construction sectors
  • Regulatory reporting or audit experience
What’s in it for you?
  • Competitive salary between £50,000 to £55,000 per annum, depending on experience.
  • Annual Leave - 26 days holiday per year increasing to 30 with the length of service (plus bank holidays)
  • Performance-related pay plan directly linked to company performance measures and targets
  • Generous Pension Scheme through AON
  • Access to lots of benefits to help you take care of you and your family’s health and wellbeing, and your finances - from annual health MOTs and access to physiotherapy and counselling, to Cycle to Work schemes, shopping vouchers and life assurance.
