The role will oversee the delivery of impartial, confidential advice and ensure the SENDIAS service operates in line with national Minimum Standards while supporting families through SEND pathways.
Key Responsibilities This role is responsible for leading the SENDIAS service and ensuring the effective delivery of support for families and young people across Buckinghamshire. Key accountabilities include:
- Manage a team of staff and volunteers, ensuring work is allocated appropriately and delivered on time and to the required standards. Complete performance and development reviews and support recruitment, induction, development, employee relations, and HR processes in line with required standards and timescales. Ensure volunteers are effectively engaged and understand expectations, processes, and codes of conduct.
- Ensure the service complies with national SENDIAS Minimum Standards and is shaped by feedback from customers and stakeholders, ensuring continued engagement and effective use of the SENDIAS service.
- Provide expert advice and guidance on the full range of SEND issues to customers and stakeholders. Ensure the team remains up to date with national and local SEND legislation, including Buckinghamshire processes and priorities. Manage complex or escalated cases and work with council colleagues where appropriate. Maintain accurate records and follow internal and national procedures.
- Oversee the development and delivery of materials used to support families and promote the service, ensuring communications across the team are clear, consistent, and well planned.
- Research, manage and evaluate feedback from professionals, parents, and stakeholders. Identify trends or issues affecting the SENDIAS service and escalate these where appropriate. Promote a proactive and solution-focused approach to ensure families feel supported and confident in SEND processes.
- Promote constructive dialogue between parents/carers, schools, health services, and the Local Authority to achieve positive outcomes for children and young people.
- Analyse complex SEND-related situations and identify risks affecting children, young people, and families, including safeguarding concerns, access barriers, and emotional vulnerability. Escalate concerns to the appropriate services when required.
- Work collaboratively with partner organisations to increase awareness of the SENDIAS service and empower families. Share relevant information with stakeholders and support initiatives that increase service capacity in line with wider council policies.
- Identify service gaps or additional requirements and recommend solutions. Support service improvement initiatives, contribute to policy development, and ensure improvements are delivered effectively within budget.
- Prepare and submit reports and evidence-based recommendations for internal and external stakeholders to support senior management decision-making.
- Maintain engagement with a multi-agency and parent-led steering group, ensuring recommendations are reflected within service delivery.
- Contribute to budget planning, monitor budgets, and coordinate team resources including staff, equipment, and systems. Ensure financial procedures are followed and support the preparation and submission of funding bids.
- Act as the named safeguarding officer for the service, ensuring safeguarding standards, procedures, and best practices are communicated, monitored, and maintained.
- Substantial experience delivering impartial SEND advice and guidance to families of children and young people with SEND.
- Experience working within a SENDIAS service or related SEND profession.
- Evidence of professional expertise and responsibilities appropriate to a leadership role.
- Expert knowledge of local SEND organisations, policies, and processes.
- Strong understanding of current SEND legislation and statutory pathways.
