Job Description
Are you a science graduate who wants to raise GCSE outcomes before the May exam window?
*** Science Academic Coach
*** Immediate start until June 2026
*** £82 - £105 per day (depending on experience)
*** ‘Good’ secondary school, Sandwell
*** Prepare Science GCSE students for May examinations
The Role:
The appointed Science Academic Coach will work with the science department to raise attainment for targeted GCSE pupils ahead of the May exam series. You will deliver structured 1:1 and small group intervention across Biology, Chemistry and Physics, linked to what classes are covering and what pupils need next. You will pre-teach key concepts, revisit weak areas from assessments, and explain ideas in clear steps so pupils apply them accurately in exam questions. A key focus is exam technique, including command words, using evidence in longer answers, showing working in calculations, and avoiding common mistakes with units, significant figures, graphs and data tables. You will also support the practical and working scientifically side of GCSE science by coaching required-practical style questions, methods, variables, and evaluation, so pupils handle the marks that come from practical understanding. You will run short, high-impact practice using exam-style questions, give precise feedback, and track progress across sessions. You will feed back outcomes to class teachers so interventions stay aligned to department priorities and pupil gaps close fast.
The Candidate:
You bring calm structure to intervention work and communicate science in a simple, confident way. You spot misconceptions quickly, keep sessions focused, and build confidence through repetition and specific feedback. You take direction well, follow routines, and stay focused on measurable outcomes in the run up to May.
- Degree at 2:2 or above, science subject preferred
- Confident supporting GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics content and exam skills
- Strong numeracy, comfortable teaching calculations, rearranging formulae, units and graphs
- Able to coach longer-answer technique, including key terminology and clear structure
- Comfortable delivering 1:1 and small group intervention with clear targets
- Experience tutoring, mentoring, coaching, or working with young people is desirable
- Enhanced DBS required, or willingness to apply immediately
The School:
This Good secondary school in Sandwell runs clear routines and keeps a strong focus on GCSE outcomes. The science department works collaboratively, uses targeted intervention to close gaps, and tracks progress closely, so your sessions align to what pupils need for the May examinations. You will receive resources, guidance, and a clear plan for priorities, so you settle quickly and make an impact from the start.
