If you’re a graduate looking to build school-based experience before teacher training, educational psychology, or a long-term career in education, this Graduate Teaching Assistant role gives you a strong starting point. You’ll work closely with pupils who need consistent, structured support, helping them regulate, engage and make progress across the primary curriculum using practical classroom strategies and routines.
The Role
- Provide 1:1 support for pupils with Autism and ADHD, following targets from EHCPs and support plans
- Run small group interventions for early reading, phonics, writing and basic maths, linked to class learning
- Use clear routines, visuals and simple instructions to reduce overload and improve focus
- Support emotional regulation with agreed strategies, movement breaks and calm transitions
- Help pupils develop independence, not over-reliance, through well-timed prompts and scaffolding
- Track progress and behaviour triggers, feeding back to the class teacher and SENCO
- Follow safeguarding, behaviour and SEND policies at all times, reporting concerns correctly
The Candidate
- 2:2 degree or above in Psychology (or a closely related subject)
- GCSE English and Maths (grade 4 or C minimum)
- Confident supporting pupils with SEND, with a calm and patient approach
- Strong communication skills and professional boundaries
- Enhanced DBS on the update service, or willingness to obtain one
- A clear interest in education, SEN, pastoral support, or educational psychology
