English Academic Coach

Do you want a KS4 role where you can run targeted English support and see GCSE pupils improve in real time?

*** English Academic Coach
*** September 2026 to July 2027 (academic year)
*** £85 - £105 per day
*** ‘Good’ secondary school, Ward of Selly Oak
*** 1:1 and small group academic support for exam preparation in KS4 English

If you want experience that genuinely supports an application for a PGCE, this English Academic Coach role puts you right in the middle of GCSE preparation. You will work with KS4 pupils who need targeted support to close gaps, strengthen exam technique, and write with more control and confidence, all while learning how an effective English department drives progress.

The Role
  • You will deliver 1:1 and small group intervention for KS4 English.
  • You will support pupils with exam preparation for Language and Literature.
  • You will pre-teach and revisit key vocabulary to improve comprehension and writing.
  • You will model high-quality paragraph structures and help pupils write accurately under timed conditions.
  • You will teach pupils how to deconstruct questions and select precise evidence.
  • You will support reading confidence through guided practice of unseen extracts and set texts.
  • You will track progress, identify gaps, and feedback clearly to teachers.
  • You will follow safeguarding and behaviour policies at all times and report concerns immediately.

The Candidate
  • You will have a 2:2 degree or above, ideally in English, Literature, Creative Writing, Humanities, or a related subject.
  • You will have GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above.
  • You will communicate clearly and explain concepts in a simple, pupil-friendly way.
  • You will be confident working with teenagers and maintaining professional boundaries.
  • You will be organised, consistent, and comfortable delivering structured interventions.
  • You will have an enhanced DBS, or you will be willing to obtain one.

The School

This ‘Good’ secondary school in the Ward of Selly Oak has high expectations and a clear focus on outcomes in KS4. The English department values consistent intervention, strong routines, and practical strategies that improve exam performance. You will join a supportive team, receive clear guidance on what to deliver, and gain experience that transfers directly into teacher training.
