Job Description
Would you like a role where you build proper SEND experience by supporting pupils with Autism through structured 1:1 and small group work that actually improves learning?
*** SEN Graduate Academic Coach
*** September 2026 start until July 2027
*** £85 - £105 per day
*** Excellent primary school, Ward of Yardley
*** 1:1 and small group support to pupils with Autism
If you want school experience that strengthens an application for a PGCE or a long-term SEND pathway, this SEN Graduate Academic Coach role gives you a full academic year in an excellent primary setting. You will support pupils with Autism through predictable routines, clear communication, and targeted academic interventions that help them access learning with confidence.
The Role
- You will provide 1:1 support for a pupil with Autism, helping them access lessons and stay engaged.
- You will run small group interventions in reading, writing and maths, linked directly to what the class is learning.
- You will use consistent routines, visual prompts and clear step-by-step instructions to reduce anxiety and support independence.
- You will support communication by simplifying language, checking understanding, and modelling expected responses.
- You will help pupils regulate and manage transitions by using calm, predictable strategies agreed with the teacher and SENCO.
- You will adapt tasks and resources so pupils can succeed without lowering expectations.
- You will record progress and key observations and share short, practical feedback with the class teacher and SENCO.
- You will follow safeguarding and behaviour policies at all times and report concerns immediately.
The Candidate
- You will have a 2:2 degree or above (Psychology, Childhood Studies, Education, Sociology or a related subject is ideal).
- You will have GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above.
- You will be calm, patient and consistent, especially when pupils feel overwhelmed.
- You will communicate clearly and keep professional boundaries at all times.
- You will be reliable and comfortable following support plans consistently, because consistency is what works.
- You will have an enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or you will be willing to obtain one.
The School
This excellent primary school in the Ward of Yardley has strong routines, high expectations and a clear commitment to inclusion. Staff work closely with the SENCO and families to provide structured support for pupils with Autism. You will be welcomed into a supportive team, given clear direction, and trusted to deliver purposeful interventions that make a measurable difference.
