Job Description

SEN Graduate Teaching Assistant

Do you want a full academic year in an ‘Outstanding’ primary school where you can build the kind of SEN experience that supports a future career in educational psychology?

*** SEN Graduate Teaching Assistant
*** September 2026 to July 2027
*** £85 - £105 per day
*** ‘Outstanding’ primary school, Wolverhampton
*** Perfect experience to start a career in educational psychology

If you are considering educational psychology and you want experience that goes beyond general classroom support, this SEN Graduate Teaching Assistant role gives you exactly that. You will work closely with pupils who have additional needs, support learning and emotional regulation, and build a strong understanding of how early intervention, routines and relationships shape progress. You will also gain practical experience working with EHCP targets, behaviour plans, and multi-agency support in a school setting.

The Role
  • You will provide 1:1 and small group SEN support across the school day, matched to pupil needs.
  • You will help pupils access learning by breaking tasks into steps and using clear prompts and scaffolds.
  • You will support pupils with communication, attention, and emotional regulation using consistent routines and agreed strategies.
  • You will deliver targeted interventions in literacy and numeracy, linked directly to class teaching.
  • You will support behaviour for learning by reinforcing boundaries, using calm de-escalation, and keeping expectations consistent.
  • You will follow support plans and EHCP outcomes, and you will contribute to recording progress in a simple, useful way.
  • You will feed back clearly to the class teacher and SENCO, sharing what is working and what needs adjusting.
  • You will support safe transitions around school, including entry points, movement between activities, and unstructured times.
  • You will follow safeguarding and behaviour policies at all times and report concerns immediately.

The Candidate
  • You will have a 2:2 degree or above (Psychology, Education, Childhood Studies, Sociology, Health and Social Care or a related subject is ideal).
  • You will have GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above.
  • You will be calm, patient and consistent, especially when pupils are dysregulated or anxious.
  • You will communicate clearly and maintain professional boundaries with pupils at all times.
  • You will be reliable and proactive, and you will follow plans consistently rather than improvising.
  • You will have an enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or you will be willing to obtain one.

The School
This ‘Outstanding’ primary school in Wolverhampton has strong routines, high expectations, and a clear commitment to inclusion. SEN support is structured and well led, with staff working closely as a team so pupils get consistent input across the day. You will be supported by experienced teachers and the SENCO, and you will gain the type of day-to-day SEN experience that links directly to educational psychology pathways.
