About the Role We are currently seeking an experienced Principal Planning Officer to join a busy Local Authority in South West London on an initial 6-month contract. This is a fantastic opportunity for a highly motivated planning professional to play a key role in driving strategic development, regeneration, and planning excellence within the borough.
As Principal Planning Officer, you will manage a caseload of strategic planning applications, lead on Planning Performance Agreements (PPAs) and pre-application discussions, and contribute directly to shaping the future of the borough.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead on major planning applications and PPAs for high-profile, strategic developments.
  • Prepare and present reports to Planning Committees with clear, robust recommendations.
  • Provide expert advice to Members, developers, stakeholders, and residents.
  • Manage complex planning applications through a project-managed approach.
  • Liaise with Legal, Landscape, and Policy teams, including support for Tree Preservation Orders and enforcement actions.
  • Represent the council at public meetings, consultations, and hearings.
  • Support delivery of a Development Management caseload of approximately 5,000 planning applications and 100 appeals annually.

About You
We are looking for a seasoned planning professional who can hit the ground running, with:
  • Strong understanding of current Development Management practice, legislation, and policy frameworks.
  • Excellent project management and communication skills.
  • Confidence in dealing with strategic development proposals, stakeholders, and committee presentations.
  • A collaborative approach to working with internal departments and external partners.
  • Essential Requirements
  • Degree in Town Planning or related discipline.
  • Chartered Member of the RTPI (or equivalent).
  • Proven experience handling complex planning applications and appeals.
  • Experience using planning software and digital tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, supervise and develop junior staff.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
