Job Description
Are you a maths graduate who wants to drive GCSE progress before the May exam window?
*** Maths Academic Coach
*** Immediate start until June 2026
*** £82 - £105 per day (depending on experience)
*** ‘Good’ secondary school, Sandwell
*** Prepare Maths GCSE students for May examinations
The Role:
The appointed Maths Academic Coach will work with the maths department to raise attainment for targeted GCSE pupils ahead of the May exam series. You will deliver structured 1:1 and small group intervention linked to current teaching, set priorities, and upcoming assessments. You will diagnose gaps fast using short checks, then teach the missing steps through clear modelling, guided practice, and precise questioning. You will build accuracy in core areas such as number, fractions, decimals, percentages, algebra, ratio, and problem solving, with a focus on method, working out, and exam marks. You will train pupils to decode questions, choose the right approach, manage time, and avoid common errors in calculator and non-calculator practice. You will track outcomes from each session, feed back to class teachers, and adapt the next block so progress stays measurable and consistent.
The Candidate:
You bring calm structure to intervention work and communicate maths in clear steps. You keep sessions focused, challenge misconceptions, and build confidence through repetition and specific feedback. You take direction from the department, follow routines, and stay focused on outcomes across the run up to May.
- Degree at 2:2 or above, maths, engineering, economics, or related subject preferred
- Strong GCSE maths knowledge, confident teaching method and exam technique
- Comfortable delivering 1:1 and small group intervention with clear targets
- Confident checking understanding through questioning and quick diagnostics
- Experience tutoring, mentoring, coaching, or working with young people is desirable
- Professional approach to safeguarding, confidentiality, and school routines
- Enhanced DBS required, or willingness to apply immediately
The School:
This Good secondary school in Sandwell runs clear behaviour routines and keeps a strong focus on GCSE outcomes. The maths department works collaboratively, uses targeted intervention to close gaps, and tracks progress closely, so your sessions align to what pupils need for the May examinations. You will receive resources, direction, and a clear plan for priorities, so you settle quickly and make an impact from the start.
